Yusef Lateef was one of the musical poquisimos of jazz in adopting the oboe, but also it used the flute to execute a pioneering music in the use of armonias and textures orientales. Flautists emphasized from the ambience of the jazz rock and jazz merger were Chris Wood, Tom Scott, Gerry Niewood, Bobby Humphrey and Barbara Thompson (acquaintance for its work with the group Colosseum), while others like Don Cherry or Hermeto Pascoal stood out for the use of flutes of other types, proceeding from different parts of the world. In the ambience of the free jazz, where it is necessary to indicate again the strong influence of Eric Dolphy, was stood out by Douglas Ewart, Henry Threadgill, Oliver Lake, Prince Lasha, Roland Snyders and – particularly – James Newton. Inside the mainstream of the modern jazz there are located George Adams, Steve Slagle, Joe Ford, Dwight Andrews, Jerry Dodgion and Lew Tabackin; and of the Japan it is necessary to indicate to Hōzan Yamamoto, who has touched the bamboo flute called shakuhachi in the field of the jazz along with singer Helen Merrill or the percusionista Masahiko Togashi. Another musician who uses this Japanese flute of bamboo, of whose construction has learned the art, John Kaizan Neptune faced to the jazz is a merger, the new age and the called world music.
